GENERATIONS A Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya Capital Campaign
"It was a cloudy, drizzly day in July when 31 boys climbed out of a dingy railroad car in the middle of Nicolet National Forest and began hiking a long winding trail to a small clearing at the south end of Chute Pond." Chronicled in the journal of first camp director Jack Appleton, the tradition of Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya began in July 1937 for the Green Bay YMCA.The tradition continues nearly 75 years later with Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya still nestled on the shores of Chute Pond. Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya has given generations of children and families the opportunity to escape urban life for a few precious days or weeks and live next to nature - often for the first time. Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya has evolved over the years to become much more than the summer camp for boys established in 1937. Today Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya is a bustling year-round camp facility boasting a thriving summer resident camp, family programs, and Outdoor Environmental Education serving 70 schools annually. But today, Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya is tired from seven decades of loving use. It is time to renew its facilities and infrastructure so that we can continue to offer campers amazing adventures while reaching out more widely to an increasingly diverse population of children and families. The Green Bay YMCA has recently completed a master facility plan to accommodate the growth in participation and to improve and update current facilities and infrastructure at Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya. The master plan has identified several projects to take place in a phased manner over the next several years. The time has come to invest in our children, invest in our families, and invest in the future of Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya. Your gift to the Generations Capital Campaign will help us complete our master plan, addressing the most critical needs of Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya and providing the necessary foundation to build upon for generations of future campers. |
