Teen Leadership Programs

Our Teen Leadership Program provides teens ages 15-17 the opportunity to improve the camp community through improving themselves and acting as a mentor to the younger campers. The Counselor In Training (CIT) and Assistant Counselor(AC) programs are specifically developed to teach these upcoming leaders how to understand children, respect diversity, and promote environmental awareness. Both programs place them in a cabin with our trained counselors and younger campers for a week so that they can test their leadership skills and learn what it takes to efficiently run a cabin. CITs and ACs leave Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya with confidence, strong character, and leadership skills that will last them a lifetime. Teens may also earn community service hours and request letters of reference after completing one of our leadership programs.

Counselor In Training (Ages 15-17)

The first week of the CIT-1 session focuses on learning effective leadership, teamwork, communication, problem solving, and how to be a positive role model to youth. CIT-1's spend the second week of their session shadowing a camp counselor and working directly with a group of campers to assist in activities. No experience required. The weekend stay-over is included with the camp fee.

Counselor In Training - Wilderness Trips (Ages 15-17)

The next step for a teen looking to gain leadership skills and experience with youth is to go through our CIT – Wilderness Trips program.  This 2 week program is designed like the normal CIT session but will present the materials in the context of leading campers on overnight trips.  The first week is spent at camp going through our leadership curriculum and practicing hands on camping skills.  During the weekend, the CITs form even tighter bonds as they go on a 2 night 3 day pack out to practice their skills.  During the second week the CITs will facilitate overnight trips, with the guidance of our counselors, for campers in our resident camp program.  Each CIT will have the chance to plan, coordinate and lead campers on overnight campouts.  Teens who have completed both CIT and CIT- Wilderness Trips will have a much higher likelihood of being hired if they pursue working at YMCA Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya.

* All campers in Wilderness CIT must have completed a physical performed by a physician within 12 months prior to coming to camp. A copy of the completed physical should be sent to: "YMCA Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya, Attn: Business Manager,  12101 Y Camp Rd, Suring WI, 54174" after registration.

The final step in our leadership program, Assistant Counselors will partner with a different cabin group each week to develop group management strategies, assist in running large and small group activities, and learn what it truly takes to become a well-rounded counselor. They will also experience how camp operates behind-the-scenes as they work in the Camp Store, assist in the kitchen, and work on special camp improvement projects. The first week will be spent working in cabins. The second week is spent working as a team completing service and support projects around camp.
